MIRA USA Slam Dunks the Junk in Elizabeth

Elizabeth, N.J.- On April 25, MIRA USA participated in one of the largest citywide cleanup events, which featured the “Slam Dunk the Junk” campaign in honor of Earth Day.

About 40 Miraists joined forces to continue working for a more pleasant and cleaner city in which to inhabit for the well-being of all families

Each year in celebration of Earth Day, hundreds of volunteers from the city, the county and different private organizations join efforts to clean and beautify neighborhoods in Elizabeth, N.J.

“Events such as these remind us of the importance of maintaining a clean environment in our city,” said Mayor J. Christian Bollwage, and added: “Uniting and creating alliances with volunteers and organizations that care about the environment will help to expand our go-green initiatives and preserve our communities.”
The ecological event was held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and began on the outskirts of city hall where the registered participants joined their designated groups. Some of the teams included students of Jefferson High School and Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The teams chose several sites to clean such as: The Port of Elizabeth, Broad Street, Elizabeth Avenue, Morris Avenue which has been nicknamed “Little Colombia”, Front Street and Jackson Park. About 400 people participated, and 6.5 miles of road and land were covered.

“I am glad to see that so many people enjoy participating in this effort to revitalize our communities,” said First Ward Councilman, Manny Grova Jr. “It is important that we realize the difference we make when we all work together to keep the city clean.”

Other participants included: the Historic Midtown Special Improvement District, The Elizabeth Avenue Partnership, Union County College, Groundwork Elizabeth, IKEA, Office on Aging, Elizabeth Port Presbyterian Center, Elizabeth Public Library, Elizabeth Development Company, the Coca-Cola Company and the Wakefern Food Corporation.
