{"id":3679,"date":"2017-08-17T18:45:44","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T18:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mirausa.net\/?p=3679"},"modified":"2025-05-04T23:33:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T04:33:49","slug":"adult-transition-education-provided-for-parents-of-children-with-special-needs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mirausa.net\/?p=3679&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Adult Transition Education  provided for Parents of Children with Special Needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_3681\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3681\" style=\"width: 644px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/s\/aHsm2Q284L\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3681 \" src=\"https:\/\/mirausa.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Foto5-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3681\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carolina Cortez Director of MIRA USA Charlotte presents MIRA USA<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nCharlotte, NC \u2013 Several Latino families were benefitted and educated about the plan that they should follow when their children who are disabled or with special needs reach adulthood.<br \/>\nThe information presented at the workshop that MIRA USA and the Exceptional Children\u2019s Assistance Center (ECAC) offered in the city of Monroe on Saturday, July 29th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Click <a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/s\/aHsm2Q284L\">here<\/a> to see pictures of the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">During the seminar, Teresa Pe\u00f1a, ECAC educator, took the participants on a walk through from when the child starts school until graduation, and the importance of the parents and the school getting involved in the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;The plan for transition to adulthood should begin at age 14 when the child enters high school,&#8221; said Pe\u00f1a.<br \/>\nIn the workshop, parents learned that they should encourage their children to do tasks that will help them become independent, and that when they become adults can help them obtain a job or take a course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One of the beneficiaries of the workshop was Norma Recillas, a Mexican mother of a 14-year-old girl with autism and a 16-year-old girl with \u201cAsperger\u2019s,\u201d a condition of the autistic spectrum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;I learned a lot of things that I did not know, and I think I have more tools and information to help my two teenage children more,&#8221; Recillas said<\/p>\n<p>While the parents attended the interesting talk, their children were in an alternate room where several young \u201cMiraists\u201d helped to distract them with crafts and games.<br \/>\nThe event, which lasted two and a half hours in the conference hall of the Monroe Public Library, is the second to be held this year in a series of three workshops to educate parents of children with special needs that MIRA USA has coordinated and completed the work of its volunteers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charlotte, NC \u2013 Several Latino families were benefitted and educated about the plan that they should follow when their children who are disabled or with special needs reach adulthood.
